although the first castlevania game on the genesis was short, it did showcase the system's capabilities, and by the time of the 3rd entry, castlevania would become one of the best-selling games of all time. while the 3rd title did a lot to break the series free from the 2d platforming of its first two titles, it also took away a lot of its charm--in fact, it took the basic elements of the first two and turned them into something more serious and darker. the ending of the game was so dark that it alienated a lot of people who loved the first two games, and like symphony of the night before it, it would cement the legend that is castlevania.
admittedly, the 1992 nintendo 64 launch title the legend of zelda: a link to the past didn't technically come out on the genesis. however, it could easily be considered a spiritual successor of sorts to the handheld, action-heavy zelda games of the past. a link to the past was the first 3d zelda game for any system, and the unique 3d perspective and gameplay of the title made it something of a landmark in the history of video games. it's beautiful, challenging, and the music, while a bit on the poppy side, is very memorable.
in a sense, the genesis might be the most impressive home video game console of all time. it was the only system ever to have three classic games--castlevania, bomberman, and ninja gaiden all set the bar high for the coming generation of consoles. and while most people today might not know what bomberman was before it hit the genesis, the company did an amazing job marketing the game to a very non-gaming-savvy audience, and the console's success ultimately paved the way for sega's eventual success in the console business.
